January 11, 1954
Dear Miss Ferguson:
Although I have not written to you for some time, you are much in our thoughts. I trust that you and your sister are doing well. It is indeed a pleasure to learn from the Walters here that you have been helping the work at UBCC. We wish you every success and we look forward to seeing you in the not too distant future.
My youngest son is planning to go to Princeton next fall. He received the grade of A throughout the years in the high schools and he would like to apply for scholarly aid. The Director of Adm issions at Princeton suggested that we get in touch with the Princeton-Yenching Foundation of which Dr. William P. Fenn is the Secretary. I wonder whether you could send us the necessary information and if possible, send us the forms of application, the closing date, etc.
After having spent two years at Stanford, we have moved to Cambridge for a temporary stay. We have suffered great financial losses and we are not able to send the young boy to College without scholarship aid.
With greetings and warmest regards from Mrs. Yuan and myself,
Sincerely,
T. L. Yuan

January 27, 1954
Dear Miss Ferguson:
Thank you very much indeed for your nice letter of January 18. When you come to Boston next time, I hope you will give us the pleasure of seeing you. Our last meeting was in Washington in 1950. Much has happened since that time.
I hear from Peking occasionally. Now Mrs. S. T. Wang is in Hong Kong and I am sure that we shall more news about our common friends.
My son has applied for adm ission at Harvard and Yale. Since he has had a good record, he will have no difficulty in obtaining admission and scholarly aid. So, we shall not bother Dr. Fenn about it.
I enclose a reprint of mine which you may find useful. Mr. Wang Shih-Hsiang has been made the Chief of Exhibitions and a special Hall of Chinese Paintings has been recently opened inside the Palace Museum. I should like to write up another report if I have the time.
I am still connected with the Library of Congress with a temporary assignment in Cambridge.
With warmest regards,
Sincerely,
T. L. Yuan
I also had the following information about Prof. Winter:
“Winter was sometime suspected as an American spy, but is now treated more friendly. At first, he was avoided by all people, professors and students alike, which was the worse to a talkative man like him. Once his house took fire by accident. The firemen were slow to come. When they came, they forgot instruments. Then they could not find the water, so that poor Winter would perish in flame, not to say his house and belongings. Now people visit him and listen to him; but he is very cautious and has not much to say.”

Dear Dr. Yuan:
Very much thanks for your letter of January 27th and for the extremely interesting and informative reprint which you sent me about academic activities in China, 1949-52. I was also interested to hear that Wang Shih-Hsiang has been made Chief Exhibitions in the Palace Museum and that a special Hall of Chinese Paintings has been recently opened.
I hope you do find the time to write another report but when I am in Boston in the spring, I look forward to hearing from you first-hand your latest news about the Museum and the Library.
What you wrote about Bob Winter is easily believed; certainly nothing would be harder on him than not have people talk with him!

Sincerely yours,

Constance M. Winchell
February 15, 1954
My dear Mr. Yuan:
I am sorry that we cannot undertake to send you a list of the holdings of this library on Marco Polo. As you can imagine there are many entries under this name in our catalog and while it is true that many of them are represented by Library of Congress printed cards there are some twenty-five or more which are not. If you have definite titles which you would like to have us check we should be glad to do that, or we could check your bibliography against our catalog. We have found that so much duplication results when lists are made up from card catalogs that we cannot undertake to do this for students in other institutions. We are sorry not to be of help.
Sincerely yours,
Constance M. Winchell
Reference Librarian
The cards could probably be photographed or microfilmed for $1.00-$1.50, if you wished to have that done.

Miss Constance M. Winchell
Reference Librarian
Columbia University
New York, N. Y.
Dear Miss Constance:
I am much obliged to you for your letter of February 15 and for your assistance in checking your holdings on Marco Polo.
I am enclosing herewith a list of titles which I have gathered with which it would be easier for you to check your holdings. In the case of L. C. cards, I put down only the serial number of each card, instead of the complete bibliographical information. For the rest, I only put down the year of publication, the edition and the translator, etc.
When I was in New York, I was a constant reader at your Library. I had bibliographical training under Miss Mudge when I was a student at Columbia College during 1920-22. It is inspiring to me to see the wonderful reference collection which you have built since that time.
Thanking you once more for your courtesy,
Yours sincerely,
T. L. Yuan
P. S. I enclose check for $1.50 for possible use.

a据玉尔氏英文本译,民初燕京大学刊行,导言一册,本文卷一卷二共一册;

Mr. John Hadley Cox, c/o Gallery of Fine Arts, Yale University, New Haven, Coun.

Dear Professor Tucci:
I trust that your preparation for the celebration of the VIIth centenary of the Birth of Marco Polo is well under way. Before leaving for Formosa for a temporary visit, Dr. Hu Shih told me that he will not be able to come to Rome much to his regret.
It has occurred to me that if you wish China represented at the Celebrations, you might like to extend an invitation to Professor Fang Hao, Department of History, Taiwan University, Taipeh, Taiwan(Formosa). Professor Fang, as you may have met his acquaintance already, is a specialist on Sino-foreign relations and has written considerably on this subject. Moreover, he speaks Italian and has lived in Rome several years ago.
Professor Fang will pay his own travel expenses, so it will not be a burden on your budget. He is preparing for a paper to be read in Rome if he is invited.
I expect to sail for the United Kingdom at the end of this month. My address after April 1 will be as follows: c/o Mr. S. I. Hsiung, Staverton House, Oxford, England.

Dear Dr. Hummel:
On the eve of your retirement from active service, may I offer you my hearty congratulations on the successful conclusion of a devoted and distinguished career. Under your able direction, a great collection of Oriental literature has been built up; it constitutes an invaluable repository for the growing number of scholars who come to Washington for study and research.
In developing these resources, you have foreseen the needs of future generations of scholars. In the field of Chinese literature alone, evidence of such foresight has been the systematic acquisition of source materials, the availability of which has made Washington the principal center of research in Chinese history and civilization.
One of your notable by-products and an indispensable work of reference, THE EMINENT CHINESE OF THE CH'ING PERIOD, is an excellent example of cooperative research. In this undertaking, you have made full use of not only the available source materials, but also the results of modern historical research in China. This splendid work would hardly have been possible had you not systematically built up a comprehensive collection of Chinese literature.
I am particularly indebted to you for the safekeeping of the rare Chinese Books from the National Library of Peiping and for your effort in microfilming these materials, thus making them available to a wide circle of scholars. All these measures bear witness to the valuable help you have given in the promotion of learning and advancement of knowledge.
Since coming to the United States, I have often turned to you for counsel in connection with my own research. Your sympathetic understanding has inspired me to greater effort. It is therefore my earnest hope that another term of your valuable service may be extended far into the future as Chief Emeritus of Orientalia, so that students of sinology may continue to come to you for advice and guidance.
With best wishes, I remain
Yours sincerely,
T. L. Yuan

Dear Sirs:
In order to bring to early completion my editorial work on the Supplement to Cordier's Bibliotheca Sinica, I am submitting a memorandum with a request for financial assistance covering a period from January 1955 to December 1956. I would greatly appreciate your assistance if this request could be put on your agenda of your annual meeting.
This project has your support from April 1950 to September 1951. The editorial work was more or less interrupted from October 1951 to June 1953 when I worked for the Stanford Research Institute.
Thanking you for your interest and support,

Canberra, Apr. 6, 1954
Dear Mr. Yuan.
I have just received a Report of Russian Research Centre and Some Academic Activities in China both sent by you and must thank you for the same. Russian Research has made much progress in America, unlike the situation in Australia. Here, for instance, at Canberra, there is a university college, where elementary Russian is taught, with a minimum of students. In the Australian National University there is no room for Russian studies even in the Far Eastern Dept. We are much behind America.
Your article is interesting not only for me, but Fitzgerald, too. I shall give over to him after reading. I think you have received a letter which I sent you in February, not very long, and another much longer, sent through President Mei in March, about Soviet advisers as you desired. I still think that their number is not so big as you say, but about 40,000. And this is enough, considering their high salaries and treatment(cars, houses). I do not say of adulation with which they are surrounded.
National Library is well supplied with Russian books, particularly scientific, presented by the Academy of Science, only readers are not so many. As a counter-part the supply of European, and especially American, books is stopped, and those available are not easily accessible. And there was a purge, of course. Even Soviet books may be dangerous, Soviet Encyclopedia, for instance becomes out of date already now.
Your place was taken by your assistant, Mr. Wang. Mr. Chang was made Secretary, not as a Communist, who he is not, but because of his knowledge of languages. He accompanied the Exhibition of Chinese Art in Europe and was absent for two years.
Of our Peking acquaintances, Bielenstein and Mulder(do you know them?)are here in A. N. U. Reclus with wife is somewhere in France and still cannot release his daughter. Mr. and Mrs. Karpinsky cannot obtain an exit permit, without any accusation produced. Mrs. Marshall was paid much money for her hotel and is still in Peking, unwillingly, I think.
Now, with regards to your family.
Sincerely yours,
J. J. Gapanovich

Rome
Dear Dr. Yuan:
Many thanks for your very kind letter of March 13, and for the interest you are taking in our Marco Polo celebrations. I am sorry that Dr. Hu Shih is prevented from coming to Rome, as his visit would have been most welcome indeed.
With regard to your suggestion concerning an invitation to be extended to Prof. Fang Hao, I regret to say it would not be within our possibilities, much as we should be honored by the visit of such an outstanding personality. Our programs are unfortunately so overcrowded that we find it very difficult to cope with all our engagements; we could, however, write to him, requesting the favor of an article of his for our forthcoming publication at the close of the celebrations. We are planning to include all lectures and writings in a special volume, wholly dedicated to Marco Polo, which in a way would be a summary of our cultural manifestations.
As to the bibliography on Marco Polo, I think it should be an exhaustive one, as you say, up to 1953, and not a supplement to Yule or others.
I shall be very glad to hear from you and meanwhile I beg to remain, with kindest regards,
Yours sincerely,
Giuseppe Tucci

May 24, 1954
Dear Dr. Yuan:
I have just heard from Mr. Wu of the Library's Orientalia Division of your letter in which you inquired about payment for your work in editing the Catalog of Rare Chinese Books in the Library of Congress.
Before initiating the necessary procedures designed to provide payment of $500.00 for your services as per agreement it would be well if we could have confirmation that your work has been completed. In your letter of March 28, 1954, you wrote that you were taking 100 photostats with you to England to complete and then forward to Mr. Liu. May I ask if the editing of these pages has been completed and if you have now made the total manuscript available to Mr. Liu.
Just as soon as we hear affirmatively from you, we will take the necessary steps to secure payment to you for the very worthwhile contribution you have made to this work which we all want to see published just as soon as possible.
Sincerely,

Mr. Henry Dubester, Secretary of the Bibliography of Publication Committee来函询问关于书目事已否进行?

8 St. Margaret's Road
Oxford, England
June 13, 1954
Dear Dr. Adkinson:
On my return to Oxford this morning, I was glad to have your letter of May 24.
I wish to report that I am still at work on the last part of the catalogue, and I am taking very good care of the photostats. As there are many bibliographical problems, I have to solve them one by one. For a work of this kind, there is no short-cut. I trust you would agree with me that in order to do a good job, it is necessary not to overlook the details which, of course, take considerably one's time and effort.
Mr. Liu has done a very good job in transcribing the descriptive notes written by Mr. Wang. So far, the section on Classics has already been completed. He is now working on the first part of the section on History which will take him several months to complete, although he can work a great deal during the summer. The section on Philosophy is also a large one, so is the section on Belles-Lettres.
When the photostats were received at Cambridge last September, they were in a state of utmost confusion, there being no logical order in any of the groups. Moreover, a considerable number of duplicates were found among them. Evidently the prints were made twice which showed clearly the carelessness of the men handling these photostats. Under these circumstances, I found it necessary to take a special trip to Washington in order to examine the books on the spot and check up all the details. At the Division of Orientalia I worked full time from October 12 up to December 11. My expenses there amounted to more than $500.
By this time the work was far from complete. It could easily take another two months if I had chosen to remain in Washington. But as my home was then in Cambridge and as living alone in Washington proved expensive, I had to continue the work(December 13-March 28)outside of the Library, disadvantageous as it had been.
More than once Dr. Hummel assured me that should the editorial work take too much of my time, I could request for additional compensation which he would support. Accordingly, in my report to Dr. Hummel, I requested for an additional amount of $750 which I thought would be a fair honorarium for the Library to pay for a work of this kind.
There is, of course, no need at all to arrange for its payment until the whole editorial work is completed. But these facts should be submitted to you in order that there should be no misunderstanding when the final payment is made.

August 6, 1954
Dear Dr. Yuan:
I have your air letter of August 2 which reached my yesterday. I am glad to hear from you, and to learn that you are not in and around New York but in England.
The name of Professor Bing Chin Wong in Chinese is黄炳泉. In order to be sure that I am not wrong, I checked up with Mrs. Wong this morning who still resides in Berkeley. I have known Dr. Wong ever since he arrived from China when he was about 17 or 18 years old, for we were attending the same school in San Francisco—in fact, we were classmates in the 7th and 8th grades. We again met when I came to California for my first year of graduate work. When I returned to California in 1919, following a year of graduate work at Illinois, he was a reader in the Dept. of Mathematics, while I had a stroke of fortune by being appointed Teaching Fellow in Political Science. He took his Ph. D. a year after I did, after which both of us were appointed to the faculty until he unfortunately passed away some years ago, while I am still living on borrowed time. His death is a great loss to our Chinese in his field. He comes from广东台山.
Here in Berkeley we had the good fortune of visiting with Dr. Hu when he was on his way to and back from Taipeh recently. He is the greatest asset we have as far as “Free China” is concerned. This is not my opinion alone, but the general consensus everywhere as far as I know. He is in good health. My daughter, Mrs. Frank Yao, who is Reference Librarian at the School of Social Work, Columbia University, reports to us from time to time on his workaday life. We just can't get him away from there. President Sproul of California had made him the most flattering of offers, but for reasons known to himself only he prefers New York. Probably that metropolis has got into his blood. Anyhow, he's happy where he is, and that is most important.
The Y. R. Chaos'are now in Europe. I presume they had dropped in on you while they were on their way. Dr. Chao is on a year's leave.
With warmest regards and the summer's greetings, I am
Sincerely yours,

Dear Dr. Yuan:
It has been very kind of you to write to me from Oxford. Many years have elapsed since we met in 1946 in Nanking and talked about that Chinese manuscript which is preserved in the Central Library of Rome.
Writing the article about the Pen-ts'ao p'in-hui ching-yao, it has been my aim to prove that it was brought to Italy in the middle of the Nineteenth Century by a missionary. In the future I would like to publish something more about its authors and about the painters who illustrated it.About this I would appreciate your advice.
Since September 1953 I am in Hongkong as Vice Consul so that I will not be able to go to Rome in the near future. But do please call on my wife who stays with my parents in Rome at Lungotevere delle Navi 30(Tel. 30948)
I am enclosing for you another reprint, a small article about a little known writer of the Ming Dynasty and whose work I have nearly completely translated.
Hoping to read from you again.
Yours sincerely

Dear Dr. Cheng:
The bibliographical cards on mathematical literature written by Chinese scholars were mailed to you early this month. They should be received after three weeks.
The title of the bibliography may be called: Modern China and Mathematics: a bibliographical guide. If you should decide to have it printed by photolithographic process, they should be typed by a well-trained typist. She should be held responsible for proof-reading. I now enclose some suggestions for her to follow.
In selecting a publisher, the Interscience Publishers, Inc., 250 Fifth Avenue, New York City, may be considered. I shall leave the matter entirely to your discretion. I only hope that the manuscript may soon be published, as I have already spent a great deal of my time in bringing it to completion.
With sincere greetings and best wishes,
Yours sincerely,

Michael Sullivan在本年出版Art Bulletin(College Art Association)Vol. xxxvi(march, 1954)曾有一文Pictorial Art and the Attitude toward Nature in Ancient China述及长沙出土之文字,前已函告,渠引用之中文书Fig. 1帛书采自楚民族及其艺术,Shanghai, 1948, Ⅱ, pl.□-1-19,想尊处业已入藏矣(曾在莫太太处见此书)。

Dear Professor Tucci:
My recent illness which necessitated a major operation in an English hospital has delayed much of my work. It is a great disappointment to me that I shall not be able to compile a good bibliography on Marco Polo, much against my wish. In order to do a good job, it would take considerable time and energy. I now find that I could do so after my recent illness.
Professor Elisséeff of Harvard told me that the exhibit at Venice will close on October 10. I would very much like to see this exhibition, so I shall have cut short my visit to Germany. I do hope to have a glimpse of it before it closes.
Dr. Olschki told me that I should give a talk at your Institute when I come to Rome in October. Unfortunately, I shall be in Rome only for a week, October 13-18, and I thought that your program must have been overcrowded and that you have had enough speakers this year.
In case your Institute would like to have me included, perhaps you would be good enough to drop me a note at the following address:
Professor T. L. Yuan, c/o Dr. W. Haenisch, Universitats-Bibliothek, Marburg, Germany.
If you think the audience would be interested in the recent archaeological discoveries in China, I shall be glad to give a talk on this subject.
With best wishes for your success,
Yours sincerely,
T. L. Yuan
Please give my kindest regards to Dr. Olschki.

Dear Dr. Yuan:
Many thanks for your letter from Roma dated October 16. Please forgive me for answering you as late as today. Mrs. Franke and I are feeling in fact very disappointed that you could not manage to visit Hamburg. We would have been most happy to welcome you here and to talk with you.
I am most grateful to you for having thought about the question to find a suitable Chinese scholar to assist me at Hamburg University. The matter is in fact very urgent question to me. I have approached already some people but so far without any definite result. I have met Mr. Wang Ling at Cambridge and I am convinced that he is a good and promising scholar. But there is another question. We had this summer an experience not too favourable with him. After some hesitation and after having been encouraged by some other people Mr. Wang made finally in the last minute up his mind to join the Junior Sinologues Conference at Durham. All participants departed in common including him after the closure of the Cambridge Congress by special coach to Durham. After the first stop he decided without any obvious reason that he would cancel his participation and to back to Cambridge. Several other participants-among them Mrs. Franke-tried to comfort him and to persuade him to stay, but without success. He insisted to go back to Cambridge and did so. Therefrom I have the impression that Mr. Wang is a rather unstable character. Under the guidance and under the personal influence of a personality like Dr. Needham Mr. Wang does apparently very good work. Now I must confess that I have not much ability to influence and to induce others, who are under my direction, to work if they do not have the initiatives and the diligence to work spontaneously. Among others I have particularly one case in mind. I am sure you remember Mr. Ku Hua, a very intelligent and promising young man doing probably very good work as long as he was under your personal guidance in the National Library. But when after departure from Peking he went to the Deutschland-Institut in 1939 or 1940 he became under my guidance every day more lazy and more indolent and he was spoiled in a way that after your return to Peking in 1945(or 46?)even you could make no more use of him in the National Library. Of course it is evident that the characters of Ku Hua and Wang Ling are very different, I do not know Mr. Wang well enough to understand if he is working spontaneously or if he needs a guidance like yours or Dr. Needham. I would be most grateful to you for giving me your opinion on this question before deciding if I should approach Mr. Wang or not.
We have listed your desideratum “Chinas Geist und Kraft” by Tao Pung-fei, hoping to get a copy for you.
With best wishes from my wife and myself.

Wolfgang Franke

Dear Dr. Franke:
Thank you very much indeed for your letter of November 18 which has been waiting me here. I remained at Leiden and the Hague too long which prevented me from returning England sooner.
I am interested in what you say about the Durham episode. I knew nothing about it. All I know is that since Mr. Wang was divorced by his wife, he has not been very happy. There is doubt that that he will work very hard under your direction and a change of environment may do him good. I shall probably go to Cambridge after Christmas and will find out whether Mr. Wang is able to leave his post. Personal contact would be better than correspondence.
While in Marburg, I had a good time with Alfred Hoffmann who showed me the “Nachrichten” published in Hamburg. Could you be good enough to ask the publisher to send me a copy regularly with his bill? I should like to keep in close touch with the scientific work going on in Germany and this journal seems to be the best one I have so far seen.
I enclose a list of Chinese students who wrote their dissertations in German. Since you have students from China who remained in Germany for many years, it is possible that they might know their Chinese names. May I ask you to find them for me? Much obliged.
I hear that Mr. Hundhausen has returned to Germany and I shall be grateful if you would inform me his address. If you happen to know sinological scholars in Denmark and Finland, will you let me know their names.
I shall be here until early in February and I hope to hear good news from time to time. With sincere regards to you and Mrs. Franke.

I am most grateful to you for the sympathetic support you have given me in connection with my work. Although it is a labour of love, one is apt to get discouraged if other scholars do not attach any importance to his labours.
During my travels I have misplaced the slip containing the titles of recent works by Professor who is now in Peking. I give the titles below, and I have asked a bookstore in Hong Kong to mail them to you direct, if they could obtain copies from the mainland.
Whenever you have time, I shall appreciate to have from you a bibliographical list of your writings on China including periodical articles. Such a list would help me a great deal in my work.
Under separate cover, I am sending you a copy of a recent work on patterned silk in China. I trust that you may like to have it for your own collection.
With Season's greetings and warmest regards,
Yours sincerely,
T. L. Yuan

December 8, 1954
Dear Professor D'Elia:
May I thank you once more for the reprints of your scholarly articles which you have been good enough to send to me? Your courtesy and kind remembrance has been gratefully appreciated.
I have been trying to compile a list of books in Italian relating to China. I feel that no one would give me the necessary advice and assistance than your good self. I shall limit the scope to books published during the last twenty-five years(1920-1954). As the □□□□□□□□□□□ are so numerous, I have to do the work at a later date, although I fully realize that they are more important than books.
As Italian literature on China is very important, I would like to make the list as complete as possible. Since the collection of such literature in British and American libraries is very poor, may I seek your expert assistance in this matter?
I have already written the titles of these books on cards with as much as bibliographical information as I can gather. If you would be good enough to look over these cards and supply the missing titles, I shall be glad to send the cards to you. With them, it would save you a great deal of time.
I have great admiration for your scientific work, and I know you would be willing to help me out if you could spare some time for it. Will you kindly let me hear from you?
So far, I have not seen volume 4 of your monumental work on Ricci and I have been wondering whether it has been published. If the Libreria dello Stato is in need of financial assistance in publishing the forthcoming volumes, may I suggest that you apply for a grant from one of the American cultural institutions? It may not bring immediate results, but it is worth trying. I have in mind the Harvard-Yenching Institute which has much money but is planning to spend it in India, since China is now closed for the time being. Could you let me know how many more volumes are being planned?
I trust that you are enjoying excellent health and I wish to send my sincere greetings of the Season,
Yours sincerely,
T. L. Yuan

December, 14th, 1954
Dear Dr. Yuan:
It was a great and pleasing surprise to receive your letter of December the 8th. Many thanks for it.
For a long time I had been wondering about your whereabouts, and at the end I got news from one of my friends in the United States that you were working in the Library of Congress and that you were busy in continuing the Bibliotheca Sinica of Cordier. I then sent you, somewhere in June or this year, some recent reprints of my articles. But as I did not hear from you, I wondered where they had finally gone. Then in September I wrote a letter to your address in Cambridge, Mass. in America. But again, no answer. This will explain why your recent letter was received, as I said, with pleasing surprise.
Volume IV of my work on Ricci has not come out. One of the main reasons is the lack of practical assistance in making researches in Chinese books, which are not available here in Rome. For the preceding volumes, you helped me very much, while you were in Peking. Since you left there, although I tried it was not possible for me to get in touch with the new men of the Central Library. Now that you are working at the Library of Congress, would it not be possible to find some help of the same kind among those who are working under your leadership? This surely would be very much appreciated by me and would make the issue of the coming volumes possible. Please let me hear from you about this special query. With the recent inventions of films, this kind of research work might be easier than formerly.
Several other volumes should come out; how many will I be able to prepare myself I don't dare to say; the more, the better.
Financial assistance also is needed, and I thank you for your suggestion. If you have practical suggestions to make, giving names and addresses, I would appreciate them very much. Chinese publications with Chinese characters in Europe are very expensive and unless some cultural Institutions helps the authors, they cannot see their works published.
As I owe so much to you, I am willing to help you, as much as I can, for the revision of your cards. Are you not coming to Rome before you go back to America? If so, we may talk about the matter, when you come here. If you come, much help might be given to you perhaps from the catalogue of the Vatican Library and other Libraries. If not, the thing might be more difficult. But as I said I will do as much as I can. The only difficulty is time, as I am alone without any assistant. Besides lectures here in the Gregorian University and in the Roman State University I have other works, especially on Ricci, by the hands. Anyhow when what has to be done will be clearly settled, we may talk again about it.
I thank you very much for your kind greetings I am glad to return you a hundredfold,
yours very sincerely
Prof. Pasquale D'Elia

December 21, 1954
Dear Dr. Hoffmann:
When I was at your house in October, you inquired about new publications on issued in China. I have just seen a notice about a scholarly publication which I wish to pass on to you. The full title is as follow:
I hope to write to Dr. Seuberlich in a day or two and I shall give more titles of recent scholarly works which you should have at Marburg. If you need any current material for your research, please do let me know. I shall be only too glad to be of some service to you.
When in Marburg, you showed me a publication “Nachrichten” der……which is a report on the progress of Far Eastern studies in Germany. You had an extra copy of one of the issues and you were kind enough to let me have it, but in a hurry, I forgot to being it along. Will you let me know the full name and where I can send my subscription? I had the impression that it is published in Hamburg.
Have you published any additional books since I had the pleasure of seeing you? If you could keep me informed about your writings, I shall be grateful.
We expect to return to the United States in February. Mrs. Yuan joins me in sending you our very best wishes for a Merry Christmas and happy New Year,
Yours sincerely,

December 21, 1954
Dear Dr. Gomes:
When I lived in Hong Kong, I saw your very useful Portuguese-Cantonese dictionary. But I forgot the name of the publisher. Will you be kind enough to inform me, as this dictionary is not found in the library at Oxford.
I understand that your translation of the Ou Mun Kei Leok had been published. As I am compiling a list of scholarly works on Macau, I should like to include all of your writings. Will you kindly inform me the titles of your other books besides these two? I shall greatly appreciate your assistance.
May I ask you to let me know your name in Chinese? Also, the names of other scholars in Macau who have written books on Macau and the Portuguese in China. Although I have not met Mr. Braga, I know his writings and his interest in the history of Macau.
Since the Imprensa Nacional at Macau does not have a list of their publications, I wonder whether you would like to compile one which would be extremely useful for future reference.
Another matter which I like to inquire is whether there is a good library in Macau where one can find all the books on Macau published both in Macau and Lisbon. I am most anxious to get such a list and I should like to have assistance such from a scholar as yourself.
Thanking you once more for your courtesy and assistance,
Yours sincerely,
T. L. Yuan

& Ref. Div.

Dear Dr. Gulik:
I was very sorry to have missed you and Mrs. Gulik when we were in the Hague on two Sundays. Dr. Hsu Mo told me that you were usually not home on Sundays and I regret that I did not write to you a few days earlier.
Learning that all you children read Dutch fluently, I am sending you a copy of Chiang Yee's Chin-Pao, en de reuzenpanda's It may be of some interest to your children.
I hear that you have published quite a bit since we met in Chungking. If the novel in Chinese published in Singapore is still available, I should like to have a copy. Besides the Trifling tale of a Spring Dream and the Erotic Color Prints of the Ming Period, both of which I saw in the Library of Congress, what other books you published in Japan?
We are here in England for a short stay and we plan to leave for the United States early in February. Mrs. Yuan joins me in sending you and Mrs. Gulik our sincere greetings for a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Dear Dr. Heissig:
You may recall that at the Orientalists Congress you inquired about the wooden blocks preserved at the Sung Chu Ss'u. I wrote to my friends in Peking, but so far, no reply has been received. Eventually I hope to break through the bamboo curtain, so that definite word can be obtained.
I am trying to compile a list of German scholarly works in the field of sinological studies. Just the other day I saw one of your articles printed in the Serta Cantabrigiensia which would have escaped my attention if I did not see that journal. Since your articles are scattered in so many journals, I wonder if you could send me a fairly complete list of your writings. I shall also appreciate your courtesy if you could send the reprints of your articles, if you have no time to compile a list.
I have wanted to come to Göttingen to pay you a visit, but as my British visa expires very soon, I have to return to the United States early in February. I do hope to hear from you before I leave.

Christmas, 1954
Dear Dr. Yuan:
Many thanks for your letter and for the beautiful plates on patterned silk. It was a pleasure to see you in our old Paris and to hear about the great work you have undertaken. Dr. Y. R. Chao has succeeded you here; I read with much interest the autobiography of his wife with all the recollections concerning many people whom I knew or read. Tempi passata!
You forgot to list the recent works of Prof. Ch'en Yin-ch'üe at the end of your letter, but many thanks for having written about them to Hongkong. Recently we received officially a delegation of Chinese ladies from Peking belonging to university circles. They told me that Prof. Ch'en is still at Chung-shan Ta-hsüh in Canton, not in Peking. They said that my old friend Wang Chung-min is all right. Ku Chieh-kang is back in Peking, running a book-shop if I understood right. Kao Ming-k'ai the linguist, who worked with me here, is busy translating the complete works of Balzac.
Herewith a list of my publications, certainly incomplete.
Wishing you a happy New Year and all success in your great work, I remain,
Very sincerely yours,
P. Demiéville
