Dear Professor Yuan,
I was really very happy to hear from you again. It is long ago since we met and the world has changed a lot.
It took some time before I could get together the information wanted by you as I was so occupied by preparations to go to Mexico for a short period. As I have no real assistant, I have to arrange everything myself. I expect to leave January 25th and return to Stockholm in end of April.
A new edition of Vemär det just has appeared.
I hope to hear from you soon again.
Yours sincerely

Dear Miss Ferguson:
Thank you so much for your kindness in sending me your very interesting report which I read with a great interest and admiration. I feel keenly that your work is meeting a timely need and you certainly have my very best wishes for your success.
Will you please send me a list of the historical monographs which your Board has so far published? The only monograph which I do not happen to have seen is that on the University of Nanking. If it has been issued, could you send me a copy with your bill?
With thanks and kind regards,
Yours sincerely,
T. L. Yuan
P. S. In connection with my bibliography on China, I have included those on Cheeloo, Hangchow, St. Johns, Soochow, Fukien Christian, Ginling, and Hwa Nan, but I have not seen those on West China Union and Univ. of Nanking.
May I also request you to check the year(not the dates)of birth of the following authors: W. B. Nance, Matilda S. Thurston, and L. Ethel Wallace. Also, the year of death of Rev. John J. Heeren whom we all know very well. Many thanks for your valuable help.

January 28, 1957
Dear Dr. Yuan:
Thank you for your letter of January 19th and for your kind comments on the recent reports of the work which the United Board is now doing in Asia. We are ourselves particularly happy about developments at Tunghai University in Taiwan where the institution seems to be making a very real place for itself on that beautiful island. Of course, we have only two classes of students so far but in another two years we will have a full four-year enrolment and there is certainly no lack of students who want to be admitted! Our only difficulty is in building up a faculty of the quality and strength which this eager group of young people deserve to have. Under the effective administration of President Tseng, however, with the devoted and hard-working group he has already gathered around him this too is on the way to accomplishment.
I list below the historical monographs on the China Colleges which have so far been issued, showing in each case the date of publication:
Cheeloo(Shantung Christian University)—August 1, 1955
Fukien Christian University—July 6, 1954
Ginling College—January 15, 1956
Hangchow University—January 15, 1956
Hangchow University—January 15, 1956
Hwa Nan College—September 21, 1956
St. John's University—August 1, 1955
Soochow University—March 23, 1956
The monographs on Yenching University, West China Union University and the University of Nanking are not yet ready. We hope that the one for Yenching will be out sometime before summer but I do not know yet what the publication dates for the other two will be.
You ask for the year of birth of the following authors: Dr. W. B. Nance, 1860; Mrs. Matilda S. Thurston, 1875; Miss L. Ethel Wallace, 1880. Dr. John J. Heeren died on February 7, 1941.
In connection with the date of birth of Mrs. Thurston and Miss Wallace, may I remind that some women are sensitive about having their age known! I do not know whether this applies to either Mrs. Thurston or Miss Wallace but I think it is something to remember.
With warm personal greetings to Mrs. Yuan and your good self,
Cordially yours,

February 8, 1957
Dear Dr. Yuan:
Further to my letter of February 4, 1957:
Mr. Thomas J. Wilson, the Director of the Harvard University Press is still abroad but I have had an exchange of correspondence with his assistant, Mr. Mark Carroll. In his letter to me of February 6, 1957 Mr. Carroll tells me that “we are indeed interested in considering the possibility of publication here. Would you transmit our expression of interest to Dr. Yuan, as you have so kindly offered to do, and tell him that we look forward to hearing from him? I am especially interested to learn whether the possible subsidies for publication cover preparation of the manuscript, for the final report does not make this clear.”
Accordingly, I now suggest that you write to Mr. Carroll; I think his interest has been whetted. But, if I can be of assistance, especially in making suggestions about reproduction from typewritten copies, I should be glad to do so. I told Mr. Carrol about the Bissainthe bibliography, but I very much doubt whether he has seen the volume.
In this connection, it would almost seem to me that, if your work were to be reproduced from typewritten copy(as was the Bissainthe work)it might promote efficiency if the typing were done under your supervision. In the case of the Bissainthe bibliography the author read proof on the same day that the sheets were typed.
Sincerely yours,
Verner W. Clapp
President

Dear Mr. Clapp:
I am most grateful to you for your letters of February 4 and 8 and for the fruitful contact you have made with the Harvard University Press. I shall write immediately to Mr. Mark Carroll as you suggest, giving him all the information he desires to know.
When I was in Cambridge last year, I noted that a copy of Bissainthe bibliography was on display in the reading room of the Widener Library. As I presume that it is still there, I shall ask Mr. Carroll to have a look of it.
I shall, of course, keep you informed as to further development of this project.

Dear Dr. Yuan:
Thank you for your letter of February 18, 1957. Dr. Hu was admitted to the New York Hospital in the evening of February 17 because of bleeding from peptic ulcer. He lost a great deal of blood that evening and was given 4 blood transfusions. The next day he rested very well. It was hoped then that an operation could be avoided.(The doctor did not want to have the operation because of his heart condition). However, he was bleeding again midnight of February 18th and an emergency operation was decided upon. The operation took 3.5 hours because the doctors had to go very slowly in applying anesthesia. The operation was very successful. We understood form the Hospital this morning that his condition up to now has been very satisfactory. His room number is 1209. No visitors are as yet permitted.
We will try to mail out the check to you before March 12.
Our warmest greetings to you and Mrs. Yuan,
Yours sincerely,

Tai Erh Ching

Thank you very much for your prompt reply to my enquiry about Sié Kang.
If I may trouble you further, I should like to find out whether Professor T'eng Ku滕固is still alive; if not, I'd like to have the year of his birth and death, if possible. Also I have been unable to find the year of the birth of Tsui Chi崔骥,who died in 1950.
I have just seen Professor Maenchen and asked him about your query. He said he had already written to you about his “Katalog der chinesischen Lackkunst,” which he says was published in Vienna.

March 27, 1957
Dear Mr. Yuan,
The insignificant catalogue has the title: ‘Ausstellung Ostasiatische Malerei Chinesisches Lackgerat.’Publisher: Krystall-Verlag, Wien, 1937. The first 12 pages are a catalogue of the paintings shown in this exhibition them follows on pages 13-24 what I wrote, on pp. 13-14 an introduction, on pp. 15-25 a catalogue of the 103 pieces of lacquer, of which 13 are illustrated on plates X-XVI. My name appears only on p. 14, at the end of the introduction to the part of the catalogue which has to do with lacquer. So you see, it is one of those items which drive bibliographers to desperation.
Yes, I have known Arthur von Rosthorn. I saw him last in 1938. At that time, he was deeply depressed by the political events. If he had been younger, he undoubtedly would have left Austria and gone to England which he loved. I wonder what happened to his fine library.
With best regards.
Sincerely, yours,

Thank you most heartily for your very kind letter of January 28 which gave me all the information I had been seeking. Your courtesy has been gratefully appreciated.
Now there are two old friends of ours about whose year of birth and death I should like to be informed:
Rev. James Henry Ingram

I shall be most grateful if you could help me in verifying the dates. I recall that Rev. Ingram passed away in 1947, but I do not remember exactly.
With many thanks.

Cher Monsieur,

April 29, 1957
Dear Dr. Yuan:
Mr. Davidson of Yale Press has given me copies of your correspondence with him, and has suggested that we explore the possibilities of publishing your book. I should be most happy to undertake this and am prepared to start work on it in June, with the hope that a manuscript might be completed early next year.
I have examined the copy of the Bibliographical Guide compiled by you and published by the Human Relations Area Files. I should prefer in the supplement to Cordier to do a much more professional job and to give it a form as nearly as possible similar to that work. I should therefore like to include Chinese characters in the text, rather than relegating them to an index.
From the cards which you have sent, I am not clear whether you wish to have reproduced all the cross references and catalogue numbers that appear. If this is so, it would be simplest to photograph the Library of Congress cards. Out of the group of cards which you sent, only two are not included in the Library of Congress cards. In undertaking to publish this material, I should have to request that the sequence of information was made entirely clear, so that the cards could be handled by an ordinary typist. I note that sometimes information has been put in above or below the printed matter and often struck off in corners. We should have to be quite clear as to where this fits in.
I am returning 3 cards to illustrate what I mean. Where I have encircled the following numbers, my question would be as follows:
1.Where are these dates supposed to go?
2.Does this information come in large or small type?
3.What is the significance of the brackets?
4.Are both names to be included and if so, is this to be done for all Chinese authors?
We are very much interested in seeing this work published and ready to cooperate to the fullest extent. If there is similar interest on your side, perhaps I should make the trip to Washington to see your material and discuss with you the form in which we could handle it.
Sincerely yours,
George A. Kennedy

May 3, 1957
Dear Mr. Clapp:
Thank you ever so much for your letter of April 30.
I wrote to Harvard University Press soon after the receipt of your last letter. But for over two months I have had no reply. Then I requested Prof. Serge Elisséeff, Director of the Harvard-Yenching Institute, to see what he could do.
Failing to get any reply from him either, I wrote to another publishing agency, the Yale University Press. It was day before yesterday that something definite came out of the impasse. I now enclose copy of a letter from Professor George A. Kennedy. If he comes to Washington in June and if you are to be in town at that time, I hope we may solicit your advice in regard to its printing.
For my future work, I have been hoping to join the Reference Department at L. C., but no word has come from Dr. Adkinson. In the meantime, there was a vacancy in the Descriptive Cataloguing Division which I applied. As my application has been approved by the Librarian, I hope to join the staff after May 15. It is not the kind of work(GS 7)I like to have, but under the present circumstances, it is better than doing nothing.
With renewed thanks for your interest,
Yours sincerely,

13 May, 1957
Dear Dr. Adkinson:
It was very kind of you to promise to explore possibilities for my employment in the Library of Congress. I have been hoping that with your support some opening in the Reference Department might be available.
Having had no further word from you, I applied for a temporary position(GS7)as cataloger in the Descriptive Cataloging Division. As the recommendation for my appointment had been approved by the Librarian over a month ago, I expect to attend to my new duties beginning from the 16th of May.
This position is not the one I would like to have. But under the present circumstances, it seems better than doing nothing. If a suitable opening in the Reference Department should occur in the future, may I hope that you would bear me in mind?
You will be interested to know that Yale University Press has at last agreed to publish my comprehensive bibliography of modern China. Professor George A. Kennedy is coming to Washington in June and will have further discussions with Dr. Poleman, Dr. Beal and other sinological scholars interested in the early publication of this work.
Sincerely yours,

Dr. T. L. Yuan
1723 Webster Street N. W.
Washington 11. D. C.
Dear Dr. Yuan:
I am covered with confusion to find that somehow or other I mislaid your letter of last spring in which you asked for the date of birth and death of Dr. J. H. Ingram and Professor Malcolm F. Farley of Fukien Christian University. On my return from vacation, I find your letter of August 1st., reminding me of that letter and asking for the year of birth of Dr. Paul H. Stevenson. I hasten to send you such information as I have.
Dr. Ingram died in June 1934 when you will recall he was the victim of armed robbers in his summer cottage at Shih Ching Shan. He was then said to be 75 years of age which would put the year of his birth as 1859. You can confirm the exact date of his birth by inquiring at the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions, 14 Beacon Street, Boston, Maas.
We have no dates on Professor Malcolm F. Farley but Mrs. Farley is still living and her address is Box 1781, Balboa, Canal Zone. I think that a letter to her would get the desired information.
I am interested to see from your letterhead that you have moved from Eighth Street where you lived so long in such convenient proximity to the Library of Congress. I am always hoping to spend a few days in Washington to see some of my old friends and perhaps this autumn I may be fortunate enough to have the hope become a reality. In that case, I will certainly call you up and hope at least for a little talk on the telephone.
With warm personal regards,
Cordially yours,
Mary E. Ferguson
Associate executive Secretary
P. S. Dr. Paul H. Stevenson's birth date is December 22, 1890.

September 5, 1957
Dear Sir:
I beg to submit here with my application for the position of Senior Cataloger in Descriptive Cataloging Division described in Posting No. 4232.
It is my earnest hope that an outstanding American scholar with wide administrative experience will be selected as the Head of Far Eastern Section. If my application for the position of Senior Cataloger would be approved, I would be most happy to serve under him and to assist him in improving the quality of cataloging cards for Far Eastern materials.
However, I would withdraw my application in case a young Chinese or Japanese is appointed to that position. I wish very much to make this clear before my application is considered by Library authorities.
Thanking you for your attention,
I remain,
Yours sincerely,
T. L. Yuan

Dear Sir:
In my letter to you yesterday, I indicated that if my application for a Senior Cataloger would be approved, I would be most happy to work under an American scholar if he accepts the position as Head of the Far Eastern Section in the Descriptive Cataloging Division.
My friends in the Library feel keenly that as a Japanese had already applied for the above-mentioned position, it is only fair that a Chinese scholar of more administrative experience should also be considered. All of them have urged me to apply, though I feel that as I have not yet obtained my U. S. citizenship, it is a drawback which the authorities will have to consider.
I now enclose my application for the position as described in Posting No. 4221. It is my hope that my two applications will be duly considered by the authorities.
I remain,
Yours sincerely,
T. L. Yuan

China in Western Literature: a continuation of Cordier's Bibliotheca Sinica最终报告。
Supplement to Cordier's Bibliotheca Sinica
Final Report
The second edition of Henri Cordier's Bibliotheca Sinica, published between 1904 and 1924 in six volumes, is a classified bibliography of Western works on China from the 16th century to the first two decades of the 20th century.
The Supplement, now completed, is a continuation of Cordier's work consisting of Western works on China published between the years 1921 and 1956. In its present form, it includes about 20,000 titles and will be made up in three volumes. At the end of the bibliography, there is a comprehensive index of authors, compilers, editors, translators and illustrators.
The title of the Supplement will be known as China in Western Literature: a continuation of Cordier's Bibliotheca Sinica. It will be published by the Yale University Press in the summer of 1958.
In reporting the completion of this work, the undersigned wishes to express his sincere gratitude to the Trustees of the China Foundation for the encouragement and support given to this project.
Respectfully submitted,
T. L. Yuan

14 October 1957
Dear Professor Rowe:
I hear that the Curator of your Oriental Collection has resigned and is going to join the staff at the Library of Congress here. Since you have always taken a great interest in the development of your Oriental Collection, I wonder if you could advise me whether the position has been filled.
I am rather interested in a position of this kind especially in an institution such as Yale. Before submitting my application, I should like to know if Yale would prefer to promote a junior member to this position, or to get a well-trained librarian from outside. Also, I should like to know the amount of the annual salary which Yale offers.
As I have a heavy financial burden, I would not be able to accept a position under $6,000. As you were good enough to recommend me for the position at Stanford Research Institute in 1951, I hope you could find out the desired information for me. I shall be grateful if you could let me hear from you at your convenience.
Yours sincerely,
T. L. Yuan

Dear Mr. Yuan:
I was happy to receive your letter of 14 October and to know of your interest in the position now open in our Library.
I cannot answer all your questions right now. But to answer in part, I believe that the University will have to go outside its own staff to fill the vacancy caused by Mr. Tsuneishi's going to Washington. I cannot be sure of this, however. The position seems to be that they will take the best fitted person from any source, depending upon availability.
I do not think there is any way in which to find out what will happen just now, in view of the illness of the Associate Librarian in charge of such matters. However, as soon as I can get to him, I will try to see what is planned.
In the meantime, it would be very helpful to me if you would send me as soon as possible a complete biographical sketch of yourself. I am sure that would be helpful.
I would certainly like to see you come here to fill our post, as I cannot imagine anyone more qualified in every way.
With best wishes,
Sincerely yours,
David N. Rowe
Professor of Political Science

24 October 1957
Dear Professor Rowe:
Thank you for your letter and your compliments. Professor Kennedy was also good enough to call me up yesterday.
My biographical sketch may be found in the 1948 ed. of World Biography which is on the reference shelf at Yale. Since coming to the United States in 1949. I have served as Consultant in Chinese Literature at the Library of Congress, Chief Bibliographer at the Stanford Research Institute, Research Fellow of the Rockefeller Foundation, Consultant to Human Relations Area Files, etc.
I have been cataloging both Western and Oriental books for the Library of Congress. The Annotated Catalog of Rare Chinese Books in the Library of Congress which I edited in 1954 will shortly be published in two volumes by the Government Printing Office here.
As I told Prof. Kennedy on the phone, the Far Eastern collection at Yale is far behind that of Harvard, Columbia and Princeton. If Yale is to hold its present academic position, the Oriental collection must also be strengthened in the near future. You seem to need not only a well-trained cataloger, but also a person who could work out a development program for building up systematically a comprehensive collection for the use of scholars.
I have been working on a bibliography of Russian works on China which forms part 2 of my larger work entitled: China in Western Literature, a continuation of Cordier's Bibliotheca Sinica. In view of the excellent Russian collection in Washington, I wish very much to complete the work before I am transferred elsewhere.
Will you kindly show this note to Prof. Kennedy, so that I need not repeat it in another letter?
With many thanks,
Yours sincerely,
T. L. Yuan

Mr. John H. Ottemiller
Associate University Librarian
Yale University Library
New Haven, Connecticut
Dear Mr. Ottemiller:
Thank you so much for your letter of October 30. I am happy to learn that you expect to be in Washington the middle of this month. I am looking forward with much pleasure to meeting you.
I am interested in the position at Yale not so much for its present status, but more for the possibilities of rendering a useful service in building up a center for research in Far Eastern studies. I am therefore very anxious to know the amount of your annual budget for the acquisition of Oriental materials. Perhaps you could spare one evening and have dinner with me, so that we could talk over matters in a leisurely way.
I enclose herewith my application form which is self-explanatory.
Yours sincerely,

Dear Miss Gaskill:
I trust that your Library has the following books. May I bother you once more as to their full bibliographical data?
My work on the Supplement to Cordier is about to be completed. It includes only monographs, but not periodical articles. My friend Dr. Taam had been working on periodical literature on China, but he passed away as a result of hard labor—a victim of bibliography.
I hope everything goes well with you. I note with particular satisfaction that books in your Library are cataloged much faster than any other Library—a real achievement!
With thanks and kind regards,
Yours sincerely,
